When Families Connect, Children Benefit

How the One Family Program supports collaboration, empathy, and reunification

When a child enters foster care, the focus is often on immediate safety and stability. But another important question remains: How can the adults in a child’s life work together in a way that supports that child’s well-being?

For many birth parents and foster caregivers, the relationship between them can feel uncertain, emotional, or difficult to navigate. They may have different experiences, different perspectives, and different concerns. Yet they also share something important: a child they want to see safe, supported, and able to thrive.

That is the idea behind the One Family Program.

Building Understanding, Not Sides

The One Family Program brings together birth families, kinship caregivers, and foster families in a supportive environment where they can learn from one another, strengthen communication, and build relationships rooted in empathy and respect.

Rather than viewing families as being on opposite sides of a process, the program encourages participants to see each other as partners in supporting children. Through guided conversations, shared learning, and relationship-building activities, families have opportunities to:

  • Develop stronger communication skills

  • Increase understanding of each other’s experiences

  • Build trust and reduce conflict

  • Support children during transitions

  • Strengthen collaboration when reunification is the goal

Why Collaboration Matters

Research and lived experience both show that children benefit when the important adults in their lives can communicate effectively and work together.

Even small acts of cooperation can make a difference. When caregivers share information, coordinate around a child’s needs, and approach one another with respect, children often experience greater consistency and stability.

For families working toward reunification, positive communication can help create a smoother path forward and reduce some of the stress that children may experience during periods of change.

A Family-Centered Approach

The One Family Program is designed to be welcoming and accessible. Participants engage in weekly sessions that include facilitated discussion, practical activities, and opportunities to connect with others who understand the challenges of navigating the child welfare system.

To help reduce barriers to participation, the program also provides support such as onsite children’s activities during sessions.

Most importantly, the program creates a space where families can be heard without judgment and where everyone is encouraged to focus on a shared goal: the well-being of children.

Looking Ahead

Every family’s journey is different. Some families are actively working toward reunification, while others are navigating ongoing caregiving relationships and transitions. Whatever the circumstances, building understanding and strengthening communication can have a lasting impact.

The One Family Program reflects a simple belief:

When families connect, children benefit.

By bringing birth, kinship, and foster families together, we can help create stronger support networks for children and healthier relationships for the adults who care about them.
