Back to School Support: Helping Rhode Island Families Start the Year Strong

The back-to-school season is a time of new beginnings, excitement, and opportunity — but it can also bring stress and uncertainty for many families.

New schedules, school supplies, transportation, after-school care, homework routines, and changes in a child’s environment can create challenges for parents, caregivers, and children alike. Even positive transitions can feel overwhelming when families are already balancing work, responsibilities, and everyday stress.

At Parent Support Network of Rhode Island (PSN), we know that families do best when they have support, connection, and access to resources. A strong start to the school year begins with making sure families feel supported — not alone.

Supporting Families Before Challenges Become Crises

Every family experiences difficult moments. Having people to turn to, trusted resources, and a supportive community can make a meaningful difference.

Research on family wellbeing shows that protective factors — including supportive relationships, resilience, and access to concrete resources — help children and families thrive. When parents and caregivers have the support they need, they are better able to navigate challenges and create safe, nurturing environments for their children.

Support can look different for every family. Sometimes it means connecting with another parent who understands. Sometimes it means finding resources, learning new strategies, or reaching out when things feel overwhelming.

Back to School Celebration RI: Community Support in Action

Each year, organizations and community partners across Rhode Island come together for Back to School Celebration RI, a statewide effort to help children and families prepare for the school year.

PSN is proud to participate in this annual event and has been part of Back to School Celebration RI for over two decades. Our team enjoys connecting with families, sharing resources, and providing items that help children feel ready and excited for the year ahead.

This event is a great example of what happens when communities come together to support children and caregivers. By helping families access resources and build connections, we strengthen the foundation that helps children succeed.

Tips for a Smoother Back-to-School Transition

Whether your child is starting a new grade, attending a new school, or returning to familiar routines, these strategies may help:

Start routines gradually. Adjusting sleep schedules, morning routines, and daily expectations before school begins can make the transition easier.

Talk about feelings. Children may feel excited, nervous, worried, or unsure. Creating space for conversations helps children know their feelings matter.

Prepare together. Involving children in preparing supplies, organizing schedules, or planning routines can help them feel confident and included.

Stay connected. Relationships with teachers, schools, family members, and other caregivers create important support networks.

Ask for help when needed. Reaching out for support is a strength. Every family benefits from having people and resources they can count on.
