What Is a Family Support Partner?

A trusted source of support for parents and caregivers navigating challenges

Every family faces challenges. Sometimes those challenges involve a child’s behavioral health, parenting struggles, family relationships, recovery, school concerns, or navigating services and systems that can feel overwhelming.

During these times, having someone who understands can make a difference.

A Family Support Partner is someone who walks alongside parents and caregivers, offering encouragement, information, and support from a place of understanding and respect.

Support From Someone Who Understands

Every family’s story is different. No one can fully know exactly what another parent or caregiver is experiencing — and Family Support Partners recognize that.

What they offer is not the assumption that they have all the answers or have experienced the exact same challenges. Instead, they offer something equally valuable: a listening ear, compassion, and the understanding that comes from walking through their own experiences of parenting, family challenges, and seeking support.

Many Family Support Partners have personal experience navigating behavioral health challenges, child-serving systems, or other difficult moments. These experiences help them connect with families in a meaningful way while honoring that every family’s journey is unique.

A Family Support Partner does not tell families what to do or make decisions for them. They walk alongside parents and caregivers, helping them identify their strengths, explore options, and find resources that fit their family’s needs.

How Can a Family Support Partner Help?

Every family’s needs are different. Support may include:

  • Listening and providing encouragement during challenging times

  • Helping families identify resources and services

  • Sharing information about available supports

  • Helping parents prepare for meetings or conversations

  • Supporting families as they navigate systems

  • Connecting parents and caregivers with others who understand

  • Helping families recognize their strengths and goals

Sometimes having someone beside you can make the next step feel more possible.

Families Are the Experts on Their Own Lives

Parents and caregivers know their children and families best.

Family Support Partners recognize that families already have strengths, skills, and experiences that can help them overcome challenges. Their role is to support families as they identify what is working, what support is needed, and what goals matter most.

This approach is built on partnership — not judgment.

Families deserve to be heard, respected, and included in decisions that affect their lives.

Support Through Every Step of the Journey

Families may connect with a Family Support Partner for many reasons, including:

  • Navigating a child’s mental health or behavioral health needs

  • Understanding available community supports

  • Strengthening family relationships

  • Managing stressful transitions

  • Finding support while involved with child-serving systems

  • Connecting with other parents and caregivers

There is no single path to needing support. Every family’s journey looks different.
